HOUSING SUPPORT AVAILABLE

Caring responsibilities can make managing housing and renting more challenging. If you are an unpaid carer and need support, guidance or advice about renting, there are organisations that can help you understand your rights

What do you need help with?

I want to understand my rights as a renter

If you rent your home, it’s important to understand your rights and responsibilities. This includes your tenancy agreement, rent payments, deposits and your landlord’s responsibilities.

You may need support if:

  • You are unsure about your tenancy agreement
  • Your landlord is not carrying out repairs
  • You are facing rent increases
  • You are unsure of your rights

I need help with paying rent and managing money

If you are struggling to pay rent, it’s important to seek help early. Rent arrears are considered a priority debt, meaning there is a risk of eviction if not addressed .

Support is available to help you manage finances and access benefits you may be entitled to.

I’m worried about finding suitable accommodation

As a Carer, your housing needs may be different (for example, needing space for equipment or being close to the person you care for). There may be options available through social housing or private renting.

I am worried about eviction or losing my home

If you are at risk of eviction or homelessness, it’s important to get advice as soon as possible. There are legal processes landlords must follow, and you may have options to stay in your home or find alternative accommodation.

I need support with housing problems (repairs, conditions, disputes)

If your home is unsafe, in poor condition, or you are having issues with your landlord, you have rights and can get support.

Common issues include:

  • Damp, mould or disrepair
  • Unsafe living conditions
  • Disputes with landlords or letting agents

I need specialist support as a Carer

As an unpaid Carer, you may also be entitled to additional support that can help with housing and finances.

You may benefit from:

  • A Carer’s Assessment through your local council/Focus
  • Support with benefits such as Carer’s Allowance

I don’t want to bother anyone.  When do I reach out for help?

  • Your housing conditions are affecting your health or caring role
  • You are unsure of your rights

Getting early support can help you stay in your home and reduce stress for you and the person you care for.
