Counselling - Support to work through difficult emotions
Counselling gives Carers the opportunity to work through difficult emotional challenges relating to their caring role.
To access this support, you will talk to our volunteer co-ordinator. They will talk to you about your needs and make sure we are able to provide the counselling support you need.
Counselling can help you to understand your feelings so that you can make decisions that are right for you.
Counselling is free and confidential. Offering you the chance to talk things through in a relaxed way. Counselling is not about telling you what do to, judging you or making you feel uncomfortable
In some circumstances we may not be able to meet your needs. We will always put you in touch with other services should this be the case.
Most of our counsellors are volunteer students who are in the final year of their degree. We have supported thousands of Carers via our counselling service since it began over 10 years ago.
Befriending - Someone to talk to face to face
Befrienders are “professional friends” they are there to share time with you. Perhaps meeting for a coffee, going for a walk, or just having a good chat about anything other than your Caring role.
A befriender relationship is similar to a friendship, however the relationship has been brought together by an organisation and there are some rules in place. The Befriender has provided references, and has been DBS checked. They are provided training and support through the service which has set the relationship up. In this case, The Carers’ Support Service and Dementia Direct.
Most of us have friends and family but do not always feel that we can talk to them, or feel that they are just too busy to meet up. A befriender is someone in whom you can confide, knowing that you will not be judged or criticised and that your feelings and opinions are important.
Befrienders can also help if you don’t have the confidence to go to a group or workshop on your own. If you find it hard to leave your home alone, a befriender can support you.
Meeting up with a befriender once or twice a month can help build your confidence and help you to feel less lonely and isolated.
Carer Coach - Support to deal with challenges in your caring role
If you need help working through a difficult situation relating to your caring role, a Carer Coach can support you. They can provide emotional support as well as helping you to explore practical steps and solutions to the situation you are in.
Carer Coaches can work with you to identify your needs and key actions you can take to help you manage your caring role. They will help you to access the right support and will work through any difficulties with you.
Listening Ear - For when you just need to talk
During helpline opening hours, you can give the Carers’ Support Service a call. If you have a question about your caring role that you can’t answer, or you simply need someone to talk to, because you need to ‘vent’ or because you feel alone, we are here for you.
